Project Description
The U.S. 50 Phase 2 widening project adds a key link to one of the most traveled corridors in Lyon County. The project will help reduce crashes, increase safety for the traveling public, provide connectivity and mobility by designing concrete high-t intersections at county roads. Adding these elements on U.S. 50 will help control access to provide safety to the traveling public, which is similar to the U.S. 50 Phase 1 Project.
The scope of the project is to design and construct a new four-lane divided highway which will connect to the previously-constructed Phase 1 widening project. The project will begin at Roy's Road and end at the junction of U.S. 50 and U.S. 95A in Silver Springs. The design will also consist of intersection lighting, drainage improvements and signage.
Other Project Benefits
- Replacing the stop condition at U.S. 50 and U.S. 95A in Silver Springs with a new single lane concrete roundabout
- Extending the US 95A northbound truck climbing lane
- Landscape and aesthetics improvements
- Connection to the existing USA Parkway roundabout
- New fencing and cattle guards to control wildlife from entering the new corridor
- Frontage road connection to county roads
- Utility coordination
NDOT is delivering the project via the traditional design-bid-build method, with the design conducted by NDOT’s professional engineers and construction by Granite Construction. Construction started in January 2019 and is expected to be complete by 2020.
Construction Updates and Traffic Control
All four lanes of the new divided highway are open to traffic on U.S. 50 from Roy’s Road to near the junction with U.S. 95A. Access to and from U.S. 50 has been modified to the new permanent configuration. Intermittent single lane closures can be expected as construction continues through summer.
The speed limit reduced from 65 mph to 55 mph on U.S. 50 within the project limits during construction.
A permanent roundabout was installed to replace the flashing traffic signal at the junction. The concrete roundabout will make intersection travel safer and quicker, with free right turns between U.S. 50 and southern U.S. 95 Alternate. Roundabouts can reduce fatal and serious injury crashes by up to 87%.
Project Timeline
- Final design completed: fall 2018
- Construction start: beginning 2019
- Construction completion: 2020
Where Are We?
Crews have thus far excavated and paved nine miles of new westbound and eastbound lanes and frontage roads. Seven high-t intersections at county roads with permanent lighting have been completed. Drainage improvements along U.S. 50 have been completed.
Completion of the new roundabout at U.S. 50 and U.S. 95A, drainage improvements on U.S. 95A, reconstructing the Ramsey-Weeks intersection at U.S. 50, and open grade paving on U.S. 50 and U.S. 95A.
Project Funding
The U.S. 50 Phase 2 Widening Project is funded by federal and state funding. The estimated construction cost is $55 million.
